In addition to gratuitous eroticism, Follett has a twisted fascination with detailed depictions of gang rape, on display here as it was in Pillars of the Earth. This is a shame as he does have a knack for piecing together a good historical yarn. The research is evident and the stories fascinating. I feel like I've learned a new historical fact or perspective with every chapter. Unfortunately the writing in general is clumsy however, sometimes painfully so. I listened to this book, rather than reading it in paper, because it was the least expensive way for me to get it immediately after finishing Fall of Giants. I'm a sucker for these sweeping saga types of book and my only regret is that now I have to wait for the next in the trilogy to be published. The reader did an excellent job with the many accents needed for this tale which follows members of five families (Welsh, English, German, Russian and American) with various connections to each other

Ken Follett picks up where he left off in Fall of Giants. The various families in America, Britain, Russia and Germany live through and react to the events of the 1930s, leading up to and through the Second World War.

Woo hoo! Another masterpiece by Ken Follett! This is the 2nd in his most recent trilogy and I am bummed I will have to wait at least another 2 years to read the final book. This one's main focus was on WWII and there were so many angles to the story and so many great characters. The only thing that seemed to bug me a bit about this book is that I figured out all the big surprises before they happened in the book. It didn't take away from the story, but I like suspense (;
