This book started out great. Then it just plummeted. Once you got to the day the chapters were counting down to that is basically where the book ends for me. The last 40% of the book was very repetitive and boring. By the time I got to 80% I just skimmed my way through the last of it. The Fault in Our Stars blew me away. I was eager for another John Green book but this just did not compare. Not even close. I give it 2.5 stars.
A short read but not quite what I'd expected (and I mean that in a good way).
Our narrator is a not-so-popular teen from Florida who wants to escape the monotonous drudgery of public school life by seeking the "Greater Perhaps" at a boarding school. And once he arrives he gets mixed up in just the kind of crowd his parents had warned him against. So far it seems like a typical coming-of-age novel, right? Oh the teenage angst! No I am not in the target audience for this or any other John Green novel. The questions and the themes (in this novel being religious enlightenment, death and the grief process) break through the age barrier. Things like the feeling of invinsibility of youth can be remembered, but processed differently as an adult reader.
