This is Toni Morrison’s last novel, which echoes many themes from her first novel, The Bluest Eye. It is her only novel set in present day, and her prose is hauntingly beautiful as always. Despite the dark themes, her words still bring light. Her work is so important and relevant, especially today.

This is the first Toni Morrison book I have read and it was very interesting. The writing was spare, but very evocative. Bride was an interesting character and the journey she took over the course of the story was eye-opening. I am not normally a fan of switching POVs, but this time it gave us many insights into Bride through her interactions and influences on other characters. For me this story is about how you navigate moving beyond just being a daughter and becoming your own person.

Fabulous. Of course. The characters have stayed with me months later, which is, I think, the highest recommendation.
