This was a short book, but a good one. It's concise and precise. Really well written with beautiful language. The characters were round, flawed, and honest. I felt like it gave me a glimpse into a world I'm not familiar with and one that I learned from. At the beginning of the book, I wasn't sure who I was following and the plot felt a little like it was meandering, but when it came together it made sense and made my earlier wondering about the plot all the more interesting. I am embarrassed to admit I'd never read a Toni Morrison book before now, and I went into God Help the Child knowing full well that this wasn't really the best point of entry. However, one of the challenges I was trying to check off in my failed attempt to get through all of the 2015 and 2016 Book Riot Read Harder challenges in a single year was to read a book written by someone when they were over the age of 65, and Morrison is in her mid-80s now, so I thought I'd start with her most recent boo ...more

Wow. Toni Morrison is a master of creating complex, complicated characters and of making a reader examine her loyalties and perceptions. Also, her writing is flat-out gorgeous. This is a good book for those who enjoy those tougher mother-daughter stories like Girlchild and A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing.
