Mohun Biswas is labelled as unfortunate from the moment of his birth to a Hindu family on the island of Trinidad. This novel tells the story of a life of struggle and often failure, his domination by his wife’s overbearing family (the Tulsis) and his attempts to obtain self-sufficiency and respect, symbolised in the ownership of his own house. It is loosely based on the experiences of Naipaul’s own father, and his upbringing in Trinidad.
