Kenneth Grahame wrote the book in 1908. Ernest H. Shepard published the illustrations in 1933. How did he balance the size of the different animals to allow them to all live with each other under ground? How did Toad go on adventures in a gypsy wagon, a train engine, an automobile or a barge? How did he ride a horse? Somehow you can count on the loyal and thoughtful Mole, Ratty, and Badger to watch out for the irresponsible Toad.
