Chapter 1 in the siege and storm and the escapade of the last chapter in the Shadow and Bone is forgotten. I'm not good with books with a lot of tension because I easily get frustrated and took a lot of breaks in between chapters. So it took a long time before I decided to read this. This second book of the Grishaverse takes us really up and down the world that Bardugo wrought, giving us a good expansion beyond the continent shown on the map in the first book and taking us far and wide, especially to Novyi Zem, where the book begins. It's a strange contrast, Novyi Zem being basically the Wild West against the Eurasian influences of the rest of the world, and the presence of the jurda crops makes good foreshadowing for the pernicious influence of jurda parem in Six of Crows a ...more

It has been exactly a year since I have last read Shadow and Bone and I know I should of reread it before I moved on to this book but I couldn't wait! I found myself enthralled in this book at the very first chapter. First let me say, what a wonderful second installment of this series. All the good romance even if it's in triangle form. Good action and good mystery! Anyone who has yet to read this excellent series, they should certainly put Shadow and Bone at the top of their August reading list It has been exactly a year since I have last read Shadow and Bone and I know I should of reread it before I moved on to this book but I couldn't wait! I am going to try to not reveal any spoilers in this review! Well first off let me say I love Alina so much! I don't like that she leads on these three guys and her feelings are not really certain on any of them. Does she like Mal? Does she like Nikolai? Does she secretly like the Darkling? I don't know. It's confusing. The romance was very much heated in this book between her and Mal and I loved every bit of it! I am starting with the romance first because I have so much tangled thoughts when it comes to who should have Alina's heart. I know that the Darkling is mean and scary and well obviously not boyfriend material but it is weird that I think he is extremely sexy? I try to tell myself, No he is a bad guy and look at everything he did but AH I just find him so seductive! Now the end may have changed my mind a little bit with what he did to Genya. I like the new character Nikolai but he is not my favorite for Alina but he is definitely the most comical character and he is the reason for all of my laughs during this book. Now I have to say my best part. This is a small spoiler. (view spoiler) As for the story, this book was incredibly action-packed! The Darkling was able to find her, of course. And he never seems to go away in this book. They find something that increases Alina's power and let me say that was another favorite part of mine. Retrieving it. I recommend this book to everyone! It is truly amazing, of course you have to read the first. This book was amazing and I am telling you The Grisha series is riveting and you will find yourself unable to put the first two books down. I can't wait to read Ruin and Rising. Will we finally see the end of the Darkling? Will Alina find the firebird? Will the Fold disappear? Has she finally alligned with someone trustworthy? ...more

This was so good I need the next book like right now! In this book Alina travels all around and meets all sorts of different people. A new character pops into this book that I love, Nikolai. His witty humor and easy going just makes it easy to like him even if you want to stab him like Alina at another moment. I love how complex they have all become. Alina has multiple things she wants but isn't sure if it is just because of the collar or fetter. I can't wait to see how this all wraps up, I don' ...more

This series is epic. Alina is trying to defeat the Darkling and trying to hang on to her childhood love, Mal. Alina cannt decide who she wants to be. She just knows she has to save Ravka.
