Beautifully evocative of this French hotel and countryside along the river Marne, where the five Grey children are left when their mother is taken ill and lies in a nearby hospital. I was expecting a sweet innocent coming of age story but this was not totally the case. Very different, very unique.

English children of a single mother are left to fend for themselves on holiday in France when their mother is unexpectedly taken ill. I enjoyed the writing style and atmosphere of the book but the whole thing was ruined for me by the most abrupt, unsatisfying ending I’ve maybe ever read.

Written in 1958 and set circa 1920, the Greengage Summer tells the story of the Grey siblings who come to France with their mother to see the battlefields (purportedly to give them a sense of perspective so that they act less bratty, but this part of the story seems mostly like a device to get them to France since it makes very little sense), but things go awry when she falls ill on the journey.
