What Members Thought
Okay, now I’m convinced King Richard III didn’t have his two young nephews murdered in the Tower of London in the late 1400s. *gives Henry VII the hard side eye*
In this classic mystery by Josephine Tey, a laid-up British police inspector tries to prove, just for his own satisfaction, that Richard has been unfairly maligned by historians. An enthusiastic young American, an actress, and a nurse help out with his research. The novel ends up having quite a lot to say about human nature.

This is the perfect book cover, because this particular portrait of King Richard III by an unknown artist at the National Portrait Gallery becomes the basis for a murder investigation. Scotland Yard inspector Alan Grant is lying helpless in his London hospital bed with a broken leg when he becomes intrigued with the portrait. Richard's face, he concludes, is not that of a murderer -- in spite of the widespread belief that in 1483 he had his two little nephews imprisoned in the Tower of London, a

Amazing! I do not know much on the Plantagenet/York/Tudor/Lancaster ancestry but thankfully my copy had two family trees at the back that were very helpful in keeping everyone straight. The research that went into this must have been a huge task. The thought process of a laid up police inspector attempting to unravel a centuries old murder was a thrilling tale!
Very interesting information about Richard III. Inspector Grant (Scotland Yard) is laid up in a hospital bed. With the aid of a researcher, Grant tries to discover the truth (daughter of time) of whether R III had his nephews in the tower killed. I kept thinking of James Stewart in Rear Window. Same sort of dynamic going on here. If the info presented here is correct, then I am convinced of R III's innocence. But, I'm sure there is another side to the story. Following along with Inspector Grant'

3.5 stars Not long after I lay this book aside, I will probably forget most of the historical facts and speculations presented. However, I really enjoyed the 'voices' of the characters. They sprang from the page, and I longed to be in the hospital room debating with them. It made me really think about the power of stories and how much we understand and know history.
