i am not a hot-shot reviewer or anything at all, but the sheer love for Holden makes me type in a few. that guy is so feeble and a heart-shaker, and do not tell me he did not remind you at all of anything that ever happened in this stupid lifetime of yours. all the great confusion, the hatred, the stream of thoughts, the tenderness, the childish approaches, the angst of a teenager.. all of it laid out so balanced and a slap-in-the-face-ly manner..its all eccentric and mind blowing!!! that guy, h ...more
Having read it twice, I guess I'm still not quite sure what it's all about. But I love the way Salinger writes his books. There is always something special in them...

Cant decide if I love the book or hate the book overall, but I loved the bond that Holden shared with his little sis. I can see why high-school kids would love this book. May be because I am way past that age, I could not appreciate the book as much. However, I was still hooked onto the book till the last page, and was moved the most by the sibling bond that's so beautifully portrayed by Salinger.

What really knocks me out is a book, when you're all done reading it, you wished the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.

I only read this book, because everyone said it's such a "classic". I was so bored all the way through, but decided to finish it anyway. I assumed that it would get good at the end,and make all the torture of the first 20 chapters worth it. NO!
It was terrible. I mean, it was an easy read...I read it in 2 days, but what a waste of time. It's VERY repetative...Also, I cannot believe that people read this in school. He gets a prostitute for goodness sake!! Every other word is gd.

Some people call this book overrated. Some people get annoyed with Holden's narcissism or hypocracy. Some can't seem to get past the excruciatingly slow pace, but this book is a classic, hands down...
To go on any further would make the reader of my review have to swallow already-been-used cliches about the angst and confusion of adolescence and coming of age.

There isn't really a plot but the characterization is good. I can see why a teacher would use this in class. Unfortunately it only reads at about a fifth grade level, and the vulgarity is too strong for a middle school class, so I don't know where it could be used.

As much as I adore Salinger I think this is his weakest book. Holden is annoying to me and I feel like he should just get over it. I did really enjoy the the narrative style and Salinger's writing is amazing.
