I just wrote a stupidly long review of this book, which Goodreads promptly ate. Fantastic.
Diane Duane's latest installment is crafted with care, and it is easy to see how seriously she takes the development of her characters from the sporadic nature of her publishing schedule for them over 30 years of writing the series. One of the things I admire most about DD's approach is that she is detail-oriented and writes when it is natural for her to do so, never desiring to sacrifice her characters fo I just wrote a stupidly long review of this book, which Goodreads promptly ate. One of the things I admire most about DD's approach is that she is detail-oriented and writes when it is natural for her to do so, never desiring to sacrifice her characters for a stringent schedule that might limit what she can and should do with their development, which can be both difficult for readers and rewarding in equal measure. I have only been with these characters for less than a year and I am already feeling the pangs of loss knowing that I don't have another of these stories waiting in the wings. I can't imagine the degree of love and dedication some of these fans have following these kids for over 30 years, but I hope to see it firsthand at the fan-organized Crossingscon ( http://crossingscon.tumblr.com/ for interested parties...)they hope to hold in NY soon.
This installment concerns Kit's growing obsession with the Red Planet and the increasingly less black-and-white duties he has as a wizard. Nita, his friends, and his family all express concern over his lack of concern for rules and safety in his investigation of life on the planet, and Nita is faced with some ethical concerns regarding this, as far as what lines should and should not be crossed in the desire to protect her friend. The characters have matured so much in the two or so short years that the events of the series take place, and it amazes me how organic their dialogue is for people their age and how carefully she has worked at aging them. Along with this aging comes a maturing of Nita and Kit's relationship, both as wizarding partners and personally, which I feel was actually handled in a way both charming and appropriate to their character dynamic.
I cannot have more admiration for DD's approach, as well as her skill in being able to keep fans interested for so long. She is a great provider of meta on her series, manning her wiki for the series as well as taking part in fanfiction (yes, an author can create fanfiction for her own characters!) and conversations with fans.
I for one will be waiting with them for book 10. ...more

Yay!!!!

My rereading of Young Wizards is complete. Now if only Diane Duane would come out with Games Wizards Play!

This is by far one of my favorite in the series, because, a) Ronan and B) Bobo
