What Members Thought
Twisty, disquieting, and compelling The Thirteenth Tale kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I enjoyed the plot turns and surprises but, ultimately, I didn't find that I felt much of an emotional investment in the story.

There's something I find very precious and irritating about books about books - how mystical and magical and sensual books are, how a protagonist prefers books to people, et cetera. At first, I was afraid this was going to be that sort of book. But it picked up quickly and, once it got going, it was very compelling. Full of twists and turns - some obvious, others less so - it kept me guessing until the very end. It reminded me a little of Kate Atkinson, and quite a bit of a Lynne Reid Banks book

This one sunk into my skin. A true gothic horror of crumbling house and twisted aristocratic family. Some of the later revelations were a gallop beyond far-fetched, but Setterfield had me so completely entranced that I did not care.
