A good two thirds of the book is set up and world building, getting to know the characters, setting the scene, etc. In most books, I get bored with that pretty quickly, but not here. I would have been happy with a book that was half again as long, just stories of the Wayfarer crew bopping around the universe, meeting new groups of people, getting to know each other, eating amazing food.

It took me a while to warm up to this, but I ended up really liking it. The characters and their interactions were very well-done, and I liked how all of their sub-stories were woven together. The author did a nice job of portraying a future with multiple species living together - not something you always find.

Several of my friends have raved about this recently and so I was curious about it, even though I don't read a lot of sci-fi--and it totally lives up to the hype! It's about the people--not all human!--on a spaceship that punches black holes into space to allow for faster travel--but really, it's about the people. Great characters here, ones I was rooting for the whole time. I ...more

Although I didn't get round to adding this until February, I've actually been reading it for months through the kindle app, dipping in and out of it as I travel to and from work. In this way I feel like I've been travelling with the characters as they make their (long) way to that small and angry planet.

I really suspect I might be the only person on earth who hated this one?
I can't get past the whole thing where they violate the navigator's consent and bodily autonomy just because they don't respect his religious beliefs, and then that's rewarded by the narrative. It just gives me the heebie jeebies! ...more

It's slice of life in space, Mass-Effect-like, but just regular sentients. All the things I love about space stories, and more. Beautiful and fun and sad and so happy.
