Where was the couple that I fell for every time they made an appearance in Spoiler Alert? Because this was not them!

This is how we are introduced to Lauren, through Ian's eyes...

Sharp features, including a beaky, crooked nose. Bright eyes. Very round body, with comparatively skinny limbs. Short as hell. His new nanny looked like a bird.

Which is nothing at all like the totally adorable character on the cover!

The Good, The Bad, and Everything in Between

The Sitch: Alex is a troublemaker on the set of Gods of the Gates. Or at least that is how it seems to everyone. And Alex isn't about to explain himself to anyone. Much less the keeper his annoying boss has given him to watch him during the final days of the show. Lauren wasn't looking for it, but she ends up helping out her annoying cousin (and showrunner) by taking on the task of watching Alex. Time is spent in forced proximity, one bed trope is activated, and when their personal walls come down and they get to know each other, guess what? Romance happens.

The Good: When you have a hero who's the fanfic writer AND appreciates the tropes as they're happening? *chef's kiss* That's when you know you have a keeper. It was so fun to see Lauren's dry sense of humor come up against (heh) Alex's hyperfocused ways. They're both characters that I like. Both characters that I wanted to see find their happy, and not just with each other. And when the heat needs bringing, Ms. Dade supplied by the shedload.

She also brought the great little fanfic snippets or text chats and such to start off each chapter that just gives that added dimension to the story. Love those. I just really appreciate the quality of her writing. These are smart characters that don't dumb it down for brevity. And yes give me all the snark regarding Game of Thrones. It gives me joy.

I've said this before so I won't belabor the point, but I also find joy in a story that gives me that fat rep that I adore and need in my life, while NOT making the book all about that fat rep. It may surprise some people, but fat folx don't think about being fat 24/7. For some of us, it's just a fact of life. And reading a book where the heroine is fat and yet not spending her entire time fixating, is refreshing when I find it.

The Bad: Points off for (view spoiler) Is this just my complaint and would it have made the story better? Probably not but I wanted it anyway. 🙃

Everything in Between: There are moments of frustration with both Alex and Lauren because of their personal journeys. It's a fine line to dance between frustration and oh lord I just want someone to slap them upside the head, but it all worked for me.

The Bottom Line
I loved this entry into the spoiler alert series and I can't wait to see what else Ms. Dade has in store. If you're into actor-actress romances and still harbor a wee bit of anger towards Game of Thrones lol, I think you'd like this series.

All The Feels is the sequel to Spoiler Alert, which you definitely need to read before this book or you lose out on a lot of context. This is a forced-proximity romance between Alex and Lauren, who were first introduced in book 1. I really liked Alex in Spoiler Alert so I was really looking forward to this one!

Alexander Woodroe plays Cupid on the super popular TV-series-adapted-from-book-series Gods of the Gates (obvious analog for Game of Thrones). Alexander Woodroe plays Cupid on the super popular TV-series-adapted-from-book-series Gods of the Gates (obvious analog for Game of Thrones). When the book opens up, he’s just been released from Spanish jail for getting into a bar fight and the showrunners are tearing him a new one for his irresponsible behavior. To “keep him in line” until the show finishes airing in 9 months, showrunner Ron assigns his cousin Lauren Clegg to be Alex’s “minder.” Lauren is between jobs, having decided to take a break from her emotionally draining job as a therapist in an ER (I forget exactly what her job title was), and decides to accept this role because it will give her more time to decide what she wants to do next, and a little bit because of familial obligation.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Alex and Lauren, and their banter was top-notch! The steamy scenes were great, and I absolutely loved how well consent was handled in this book. I also liked the body positivity in this book. There are insults towards Lauren for her general physical appearance and she is sensitive to the threat of sizeism, but it isn’t on the page. I really liked how she was confident about her body and that made the steamy scenes even more satisfying.

However, this book unfortunately fell short for me in a few ways. I found it to be rather slow paced, especially in the first half. I also found some of Alex’s behavior to be really red-flag-ish, especially for someone who’s supposed to be 39 years old. His motives might be noble, but his disregard for consequences made me really uncomfortable and I found it hard to root for their relationship, even though there may have been multiple reasons for this behavior, and he does eventually get called out for it. What really didn’t work for me, though, was the conflict towards the end, which uses one of my least favorite plot devices, (view spoiler). I was also really missing some of the things I loved about the first book, which was the actors’ involvement in the fandom! I was expecting (and hoping for) the fanfiction to be a bigger part of this book, and I’m kind of sad it wasn’t (though I don’t know how it would have fit in). Overall, I did enjoy reading this, and I definitely recommend it for readers who love Olivia Dade’s books and who loved the first book. I also recommend it for readers who love relationships between celebrities and “normal people” or forced proximity / only one bed.

I enjoyed this story. I loved the build up of friendship between the two main characters. It made the romance more believable for me. And I loved the unlikely match. Overall, very fun and entertaining.

Loved Wren and Alex, they are loveable characters. Sometimes I read about couples and while I may like them, I do not think they would actually last (yes, I am talking about fictional characters and their relationship lasting however, the good characters feel real). I absolutely believe in Alex and Wren and their beautiful relationship, they have the ability to Grow together. Alexander Woodroe & Lauren Clegg

I liked both of these characters individually even though it took me a bit to warm up to Alex.

Their growing friendship to more was believable on one level, but I just couldn't get past the way Alex described Lauren (and even how she saw herself) after seeing the woman on the cover who I assumed was Lauren and I thought was beautiful.

That completely threw me and took away some of my enjoyment of the story. ...more
