I'm of two minds concerning this book. As a young adult novel dealing with the tragedy of cancer victims, dying, and death it is well done, and perfect for the 14 to 16 year old ready to tackle such a serious subject. As a crossover book for the adult market, it falls pretty far from the mark and comes across as a sentimental tearjerker that hits all the expected points. It's also a teenage love story with the sad twist that both partners are dying.

There are some peculiar faults in this story. H

I don't want to review this book right now. It's personal. It's emotional. It was beautiful.

I'll write a critique later.

For now I just want to cry and not entirely out of sadness. This book made me think about what it means to love and be loved. What it means to live or to not live.

I wish I could write something that would encompass all my feelings, but it just isn't coming to me.

EDIT

I didn’t want to read this book. I certainly didn’t want to like it. I hated Looking for Alaska and I thought

Usually I prefer suspense much more but since my sister had this book and it had so great reviews I thought why not give it a try - worst case I can give up after few pages - I thought.
I started it with ought expectations (another cancer drama - hopefully it won't be too depressing, I thought) and was positively surprised because I loved this book from the first page. The beginning is most fun reading you can imagine it is so down to earth yet upbeat and hopeful.
Because of Hazel's and August's (

This is now my favorite book. I started reading it on a whim one evening, and I read the entire thing in one sitting. I couldn't put it down, it was emotional, honest, and wonderful. I cried like a baby, I was in bed and was forced to get up and get tissues because I was so genuinely sad. This isn't a bad thing, sometimes it is good to be emotionally touched by something and to let it into your heart and let it break it. Usually, I'm not into that, but this novel is worth it. Also, John Green is ...more

Wow. And I thought the characters in Looking for Alaska were pretentious and unlikable. ...more

I'm torn... I found myself needing a break from the book sometimes, because it was just too emotional. At the same time I often wondered if I actually believed in the characters. In many ways Hazel and Augustus didn't match their age. They were so wise and so well-spoken, and to me seemed like two 70 years olds stuck in teenage bodies. And I'm wondering if the characters seem realistic? But maybe the world is full of teenagers like Hazel and Augustus? Or maybe being diagnosed with cancer in such ...more

I really didn't like this book. The characters were so pretentious. Green tried to make them mature by making them use eloquent language, but their actions were so immature and overdramatic. The kiss in the Anne Frank House left a bad taste in my mouth. It was so disrespectful, making the hooros of the holocaust all about them. I really haven't like Green's books or his characters. ...more

this book pretty much followed the movie. Both were sad and touched the heart strings. I would recommend this book to anyone. This book tells the story of two young adults and how they grew to love each other even thou both were fighting cancer and had no long term future together.

Very good book. More geared to teens and young adults but it was still a good enough read to make me cry. Do not read it if you do not want to cry. The ending wasn't quite was I expecting but in hindsight it was the perfect ending. ...more
