Classic sci-fi from the PKD mind. Not totally whacked out like some of the later stuff and a good early take on altered realities. The apparent setting is the 1950s, the real time 1998 after the moon has been colonised. Perhaps typically humans have taken up a form of war between the colonies of the moon and the people on earth. This one is quite early PKD and one of his forays outside pulpy Sci-Fi. It relies heavily on an idea that was exploited by The Truman Show. What if one mans world is completely fake - an illusion created and maintained by outsiders. The revelation and subsequent unravelling of Ragle Gumm's world is heavily criticised in the Afterforward of my edition but I thought it worked quite well.

I enjoyed this book but felt a little disappointed with the ending.
in the the 1950's and Ragle Gumm always picks the winner from a daily newspaper competition but he starts to suspect that the little town he lives in is maybe not what it seems or is even real.
I would read this again but it wouldnt be one of PKD's i would instantly recommend. ...more
