One of the strengths of the book is its focus on the social and cultural factors that have driven human history, rather than just the biological or environmental ones. Author makes a compelling case that much of what we consider to be "natural" or "normal" in human society is actually the result of cultural beliefs and practices that have been shaped over thousands of years.

The book is also thought-provoking in its exploration of the impact of technology and science on human society.
