4.5 stars. my first fantasy book ever and i was not disappointed. fantasy is a real challenge for my brain, but i love how the “real” world is also included to make things not so overwhelming. i loved jude’s confidence and that cardan’s complexity kept me engaged the whole time. & the way they interact is soooo intriguing. i wasn’t expecting there to be murder and politics but it just made everything better. i cant wait to see how this world progresses and develops in the next 2 books! also can ...more

Shelves: favorites, fantasy-romance

The breadth of imagery drew me in from the first chapter. The references to fairy tales from old made the story rich and textured. The foreshadowing was exceptional and kept the suspense high. It was pure gold indulgence. Characters were interesting and real and their dynamics were thrilling and enjoyable! Best fantasy I’ve read this year!

I was obsessed with the worldbuilding in this. It was magnificent. It drew me in immediately. The beginning of the book was fascinating, but toward the middle of it, I found myself starting to grow more and more bored. I forced myself to keep reading and I'm glad that I did, because the twist at the end really got me. I wasn't expecting it at all, which made it all the more pleasing. ✨️Holly Black truly is the fairy 🧚‍♂️ ✨️ queen ! Great story from start to finish. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you going throughout. No embarrassing s*x scenes but a slow build-up of enemy to possibly lovers ! I liked how this book/ storyline didn't focus on it so much as some others but developed a more indeoth story than going down the raunchy chapter after chapter s*x scenes. Love all the characters and certainly build the foundation for more books, both sequal and prequel.
