4 stars. I loved the first half of this book. It was once it became a courtroom drama that my interest started to dwindle a bit. But then that awesome ending came and I was really happy with how everything wrapped up, particularly in terms of the murder case.

Where the Crawdads sing follows the heart-wrenching journey of Kaya, the 'Marsh Girl', growing up abandoned and mostly feral, while also jumping back and forth in time to a murder investigation about one of the nearby town's inhabitants. This was an absolutely wild ride, and a gripping, page-turner, with vivid characters that jump right off the page and emotions that felt entirely palpable. I was recommended this so many times before I finally picked it up and I can definitely see why!

Loved this one! So beautifully written with breathtaking imagery. Sometimes a little slow and sometimes moving a bit faster - sort of like the marsh. Kya was such an amazing character who overcame so much. The story just kept getting better and better. My heart was in my chest and I didn't want this one to end. But it was poetic in the outcome! ;-) ...more

Overall, I enjoyed this story, but it took way too long to actually get interesting.

Also, I am totally fine with changing things that'll affect "historical accuracy" if it makes it less problematic. There was really no reason to use the n word in this book (especially considering how recently it was published) just to show how one of the characters was mistreated. There are plenty of other ways to do that. ...more

This is one of the books of 2021, everyone it seems has read it and fallen completely in love with it. I wasn't quite as taken with it though. Yes, its a lovely story of a young girl left to fend for herself in the deep south, the people who treat her kindly and those that don't culminating in a tense courtroom drama where the heroine is on trial for murder. I just wasn't feeling it though. The whodunnit aspect of the novel felt like a distraction and I wasn't sure where this book fits. Delia Ow ...more
