Shelves: historical-fiction

I approached this book with caution because I did not expect that I would like it. Based on what I heard about it, I thought it wouldn't be something I usually read. I hardly ever read historical fiction, and I generally dislike books that tell one person's life story from childhood to some much later point in their life.

And to some extent, I was right. It was just the kind of story I don't usually read. That is why it is very difficult for me to rate it. On the one hand, it is a very good story ...more

Kya is a girl who was forced to live on her own in the marsh on a coastal town of North Carolina. She earned the name "Marsh Girl" by her own unique ways of behaving because she was left to her own devices. She had to learn how to survive, make money, get the things she needed with only a few years of learning from her family. One by one they left her until she was all alone.
