I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. This book was definitely a wild ride.

First off, I really loved the premise for this book. When I read the synopsis I knew that I had to read this book. I think that it is the execution of the ideas that I am not the biggest fan of. I think that perhaps the combined writing style of these two authors is just not to my liking. I didn't find it as relatable as I generally like in a story. First off, I really loved the premise for this book. When I read the synopsis I knew that I had to read this book. I think that it is the execution of the ideas that I am not the biggest fan of. I think that perhaps the combined writing style of these two authors is just not to my liking. I didn't find it as relatable as I generally like in a story. That's not to say that I didn't entirely like the book though. There were parts of this book that I very much enjoyed. I felt that the world-building was a bit disjointed. It was hard to really grasp the magic system of this world and the roles that it plays. Parts of the world-building were quite vivid though in terms of details. I liked the plot of the story, though most of the plot twists happen at the end of the book. It definitely makes me want to read the next book.

This book is told from the POVs of several main characters. Each character is distinct and has their own personality. There are different dynamics at play in the story when the different characters come together. I really liked the character growth for these characters. It is easy to see what has changed them and to what extent.

I liked that the romance felt organic. The main couple form an alliance and grow a little closer as they spend their days together. They find out that the other person isn't what they had expected after all. There is definitely more to say about the romance but it would get spoilery so I will stop myself right there.

Overall, this was a thrilling story of magic and villains. The storytelling wasn't for me but I did appreciate the premise and plot as well as the complex characters. I definitely plan to read the next book in this series and I might even read more from these authors in the future and see if the storytelling better suits in a different book. So don't let my personal rating fool you. Even though parts of it didn't work for me, I definitely recommend this one!

A dark & magical Hunger Games. I needed this book as soon as I knew it was available. A pile of teenage magicians, most of them wealthy and privileged, vying to be the one left standing in a mass duel to the death.

There was a bit of a slow start to this one as the history of the people was established, but once things got rolling, I was chomping at the bit. Aaaaand once again I went into a read without recognizing/remembering that it is part of a series. So things really got rolling, I ...more

Woah hold on a minute! The Hunger Games with a dash of Game of Thrones style with magick plus bloodier and more ruthless? So much yes! It took all of half a hearbeat after reading the synopsis for me to decide I MUST get in on this one as soon as possible. And I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this book.

Like many people, the idea of this book - The Hunger Games with magic - REALLY excited me. Especially as it was also advertised as having strong LGBT representation.

First of all I found the setting/time of the book quite confusing. It seemed like a magical medieval type setting but then would mention cars and school lockers other modern things. I know there's magic but it just seemed strange that the champions wouldn't use any kind of modern tools and techniques in the tournament. It was just a Like many people, the idea of this book - The Hunger Games with magic - REALLY excited me. Especially as it was also advertised as having strong LGBT representation.

The style of the book is multiple point of view characters which is a style I personally really enjoy. It allows the reader to really get into the minds of the characters and understand what makes them tick. Of course with this being a book about all the PoV characters trying to kill each other, this meant that nobody was safe! There is a real risk of the reader getting close to a character and starting to love them just to have them brutally ripped away from them! That's my kind of book.

Now, although the book is about a murder tournament, it doesn't actually start until about halfway through the book and then when it does begin there are exciting moments but overall is just kind of a bit limp...

Most of the characters talk a good talk about killing the others and being "villains" and "monsters" and then as soon as it is time to put the money where their mouth is, they're kittens. All bark and no bite.

I was expecting some strong LGBT+ elements but there was pretty much nothing. One hinting sentence and that was it. The "love story" was your standard YA opposites attract boy meets girl yawnfest.

There are positives however! The writing style is smooth and easy to follow so it was an easy read. The idea of the plot is great and the magic system is really interesting - especially the system used by Gavin Grieve in the latter half of the book. It is very much a young adult book and I think many young adults will love this and it may well be a great competitor in the genre.

I think this book will appeal to readers who like fantasy. You have seven dueling families who have to put their children in a magic Hunger Games to claim the major magic for the next 20 years. But one of the contenders has it in their mind that they can break the curse and stop this madness continuing. If only they can get the others to work with them to make it happen.
