A remarkable book way ahead of its time. With the exception of Jane Eyre, this is now a favourite Bronte novel , (of the few I have read!)

First off, I read this book for a challenge. I'm not much for classic literature and this book reinforced that for me (I was thinking I should try to read Pride and Prejudice again - I've never been able to get into it, but that's now going to be for another day some long time in the future.) This book started really slowly. I was about to give up but then Helen's story started and the story got so much better. It was just so much more interesting than Gilbert's story. I did not like Gilbert at all anyway, he was so immature and moody. Helen matured a lot during the story, and in the end she had become an interesting and complex character.
