4.5 stars a very well done take on Jack the Ripper and a feisty young heroine determined to buck the Victorian expectations for lady like behaviour. Handsome yet irritating love interest, gruesome details plus a careful selection of photos.

I'm going to be overly generous on my rating for this book for a couple of reasons. Truthfully, this probably is more of a four star reading, but I've rounded up to five for this particular review because I feel like I was unfair on this book before going in.

I'm going to be overly generous on my rating for this book for a couple of reasons. Truthfully, this probably is more of a four star reading, but I've rounded up to five for this particular review because I feel like I was unfair on this book before going in.

Let me start with a confession: I never planned to read this series. When this book came out awhile back I had decided instantly that I would never, ever give this book a chance for one single reason: James Patterson endorsed it. I know, I know. James Patterson is one of the most popular authors on the market. He writes best sellers like candy. People write rave views about his work. Well, I'm one of the few who can't stand James Patterson's books. I've never read a single book that I liked, and believe me I've tried a lot of his books. More books than you can see here on my account. I tried Alex Cross and I wasn't a fan. I tried the Witch & Wizard series and cringed by the 20% mark. Maximum Ride was eye-roll inducing. And Zoo was a much better tv show than it ever was a book. So, you could say that I was incredibly biased when I saw James Patterson was endorsing this book. I figured if it was anything like the books he had written, then it wasn't the worth the time or money to try it.

But, I caved recently. Barnes & Noble had their book haul with 50% off on books and they were selling the first two in the series for under $5. That was a deal I could make for a series that is pretty well rated.

And I was genuinely shocked. This book was great. This was exactly what I was hoping Give the Dark My Love would be. The protagonist is driven and focused on her chosen career despite the pressures on her to conform to society just like the protagonist in Give the Dark My Love, but unlike the protagonist in that book, Audrey Rose's relationship is much better fleshed out. Thomas doesn't feel like a throwaway character with no value beyond being Audrey's romantic interest. In Give the Dark My Love, the love interest there was so pointless and literally just thrown at the main character that I honestly just wished he would die so we could get to the point of the story. He had no value to the plot and the chapters that were in his point of view were cringe worthy to say the least.

This book, the perspective is entirely in Audrey Rose's point of view, yet Thomas felt like an interesting character with a history and genuine reason for being part of the plot. He's her partner in crime without ever completely outshining her. It was truly a much better dynamic and I genuinely liked reading this story more because of it.

Overall, this was a seriously pleasant surprise and I'm glad that I got past my bias and picked this book series up. I'm looking forward to reading the next one, Hunting Prince Dracula. ...more

This book is definitely worth reading. The end surprised me as to who actually was behind all the killings. Looking forward to reading to the next book.
