Betrayed (House of Night, #2) in Vampire Bites

Betrayed, Book two of the House of Night series was in a word, a puzzlement. Some parts were interesting, while a great deal of it was (forgive me for saying this) painfully dull. I can't really stand the main character's narrative style (I suppose I should take this grievance up with the Author or the Editor) either way, I'm not saying a narrative in the first person's point of view is atrocious, no, it's just Zoey (or the Author's) thought process seems a bit higgledy piggledy. I can't really stand the main character's narrative style (I suppose I should take this grievance up with the Author or the Editor) either way, I'm not saying a narrative in the first person's point of view is atrocious, no, it's just Zoey (or the Author's) thought process seems a bit higgledy piggledy. It doesn't really promote a smooth reading process; what with all the words just thrown into the mix, giving the reader a feeling that the main character is perpetually scatterbrained.
I was perturbed by Zoey's amazing act of juggling 3 guys. I mean, is she or is she not over Heath? Blood bond or imprinting notwithstanding, I thought she had the common sense to break it off with her vapid beer-chugging jock boyfriend? Then there is the issue of Loren, the hunky and I quote "hot and gorgeous" vampire teacher whom Zoey has flirted with, and she seems to carry a slight torch for the guy - and of course caught in the middle of all this bedlam is Erik, who is in what I call "relationship purgatory" with Zoey. She seems to think they aren't quite that official yet, which gives her the right to swap blood with Heath and exchange sweet nothings with Loren. tsk tsk
I'm guessing with all the interesting scenes, the Author is trying to impart some profound knowledge on the follies of cheating on one's boyfriend. However, it really does come off as preachy in some instances. It needs work, along with lessons about sex, drinking, doing drugs, and halting the girl bashing (throwing colorful words like: hag, whore, slut etc.).
I'm willing to admit that in spite of all the my misgivings about the book, the story is interesting. It's not your typical vampire tale, it has a twist that makes you think out of the normal box that most vampire stories are placed in. Since the dawn of the Twilight craze, I'm sure a lot of YA's are eager for their vamp fix, and this book is something that they might enjoy. For me? sadly, not so much.

So it definitely picked up a bit. Enough where I can go on to the next book. The plot was decent, but I'm sensing that this story is about to get way more complicated, which is something I really like. The characters are feeling more real and overall, I think this is going somewhere. Very disappointed in Zoey, because I can sense her inability to deal with guys is going to be a huge problem. I really liked this book and this book earned more the first did by far, yet I couldn't bring myself to give this book 5 stars. Just in case someone who hasn't read the book yet reads this, I won't say much except I loved it. By the end I read over 200 pages at once and once specific part made me cry ALOT.
