I found the story idea to be interesting: ✅ - I used to really love reading dystopian books, so I was excited to start this series.

There were few to no instances in which the writing or writing style detracted from my reading experience in a jarring way: ✅ - The story is told through two POVs, which I love. Although the writing itself seemed a bit immature at times, I was still able to read it quite easily.

I found the story idea to be interesting: ✅ - I used to really love reading dystopian books, so I was excited to start this series.

There were few to no instances in which the writing or writing style detracted from my reading experience in a jarring way: ✅ - The story is told through two POVs, which I love. Although the writing itself seemed a bit immature at times, I was still able to read it quite easily.

I found the plot to be well executed, with little to no plot holes: ❌ - There were several moments throughout this book where the MCs came to conclusions and realizations too conveniently to feel natural, and the reveal of needed information also came a little too easily. It made the plot execution seem a little flimsy at times.

I found the world building to be immersive and particularly well done: ❌ - The world-building wasn’t especially innovative or thorough, and although that is expected to some extent when it comes to YA dystopian books, it still failed to ever completely immerse me.

I liked the main character and felt personally connected to them: ✅ - I liked both Day and June as characters throughout the entirety of the reading experience, which doesn’t usually happen for me.

I adored the chemistry between the MC and the love interest/other significant characters: ❌ - While I did like Day and June, I didn’t actually ship them as a couple with any passion. That might have been because their attraction seemed to veer a little on the side of insta-love in my opinion. I also didn’t feel excessively attached to the MCs and their relationships with their family members, which I don’t particularly even have an excuse for.

This book made me reflect on some aspect of life in a meaningful or socially productive way: ❌ - The author often brought up race in ways that I don’t think was remotely necessary. It was disappointing to think that even in a dystopian society, fifteen year olds still feel the need to ponder whether their love interests are Asian or Caucasian or Native or Mongolian or whatever, especially in a distorted society where the cultural implications of those ethnicities seem to no longer exist.

I was moved emotionally at some point during my reading experience: ✅ - I gave this point generously, because while John did affect me emotionally, I never actually cried.

I was satisfied with the ending: ✅ - I have no issue with the way that this book ended, especially considering the fact that it is the first book in a series.

I would re-read happily or recommend passionately: ❌ - While this book was a quick read, I don’t have any interest in re-reading it. I’m not in love with the story or characters enough to rave about it to others.

🤩 I also want to add that the antagonist characters didn’t feel very well fleshed out to me, and their bland nature detracted from the book’s maturity in my opinion. Despite the issues that I’ve outlined, I didn’t 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 this story. I definitely plan to continue on with the series.
