I didn't learn a huge amount (I am studying the Great Lakes in grad school), but I did find this book to be an eloquent explanation of the series of events that has led to where we currently stand in terms of the health of the lakes. I especially liked the chronological order - I haven't seen any other books discuss the issues in this manner. It really helps integrate the various problems at play.

A fascinating history of how the US (and to a lesser degree, Canada) has interacted with the Great Lakes for the last few hundred years. I grew up in one Great Lakes city and currently live in another, and I was a bit astonished at all the history about these cities and how they interface with the Great Lakes I've never heard before.
