What Members Thought
Well, Shadow and Bone exceeded my expectations. Actually, it didn't exceed them, I just enjoyed it for no reason whatsoever. I have thought a lot about this, but still can't figure out why I enjoyed it despite hating it for the typical YA fantasy it was.
There are so many overused YA tropes in this book, I don't even know how the author managed to fit them all:
- the "chosen one"
- "plain-looking" MC with hidden powers
- MC does idiotic stuff (a lot)
- a love triangle
- best friends to lovers

This took me almost a week to finish because of how the information and terms were kinda complex for my mind to comprehend when I first read half of the book. I had to re-read some parts and chapters again and again just so I could have a clear understanding and image of what is happening. Honestly, for me, it only got only interesting when I got to the peak of the book. I think that was one of the ways for the author to let the reader maintain interest to proceed to the sequels.
