This was a very interesting look into deaf culture. I really appreciated how nuanced this felt -- I didn't feel like the author was simplifying aspects of deaf culture/ASL for my benefit (although I'm sure she was! But it didn't feel like that). This book blew me away. It also made me realize just how little I knew about the Deaf community and how ASL worked. How Cochlear Implants are up for debate, how racism exists everywhere, the part on BASL blew my mind. I felt so deeply for these teenagers trying to survive, trying to be proud of who they are despite societal views. I loved the interspersed deaf history and the ASL education.

I enjoyed reading about these deaf students, teacher/admin. and their struggles, albeit in a fiction setting, this book shows some of the problems the deaf community encounters. I liked the history/facts/info in between the chapters.
A fun, interesting, educational read.

Absolutely amazing story. The audiobook version likely made me consider accessibility and inclusion at an extra level simply because of the medium. I would recommend this book to everyone. I want to check out more of Novic's books.
