Ta-Nehisi Coates is pure brilliance. This is the story of Hiram, one who is bound to the “Task” as he calls slavery in Virginia. The book starts out as Hiram, the son of a white slave owner and a mother he cannot remember, is driving his white half-brother around after a night of drunkenness. The buggy somehow falls into the river and Hiram is saved by a magical force he struggles to fully grasp and understand throughout the novel.
