Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
1880s Dakota Territory through the eyes of a fourteen-year-old Chinese-American girl
Park notes that she wrote this book "as an attempt at a painful reconciliation" to the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this story! I never got into the Laura Ingalls Wilder stories as a kid, but for anyone who did enjoy them, you will LOVE this book. I appreciated the author's note at the end discussing the importance of representation, but also keeping historical accuracy. This book was emotional and endearing. I will be buying a copy for my students to read.
