Verity in Some Like It Hot!

I am not real sure how to rate this one. At first I was enjoying this read and then it seemed to slow way down. If not for the ending and the twist it led the reader I would not have been able to even give this one 3 stars.

I thought I knew what I was going to write in my review when I’d been almost finished with the book. Now though, after the last pages threw me for a loop, I have no words. Well, let’s start with the fact that this was my first book by this author and I had no expectations going into this psychological thriller, trying to keep an open mind.

I was positively surprised by how great the story started, with such an unusual and very inventive way on how the characters met. It had a great flow and kept I thought I knew what I was going to write in my review when I’d been almost finished with the book. Now though, after the last pages threw me for a loop, I have no words. Well, let’s start with the fact that this was my first book by this author and I had no expectations going into this psychological thriller, trying to keep an open mind.

I was positively surprised by how great the story started, with such an unusual and very inventive way on how the characters met. It had a great flow and kept me reading, but it didn't give me the urge to finish it in one go until I was already a few chapters in. I'm not sure why I wasn’t hooked from the beginning, but when I finally was, it became captivating, thrilling and so unbelievably good!

My feelings during this read were not something I was prepared for, let alone the road this story took me on, but then the ending messed me up tenfold.

There may be things that will disturb you, anger you or frighten you. But in the end, I am sure you’ll look at everything differently and question everything you’ve read.

I don’t want to say anything else about the story because the synopsis tells enough and it’s best to go into this book knowing as little as possible. I thought I knew what’s going to happen and I am usually good at predicting stories but, although I had a lot of suspicions, the ending was a total mindfuck and threw everything I thought I knew overboard. (Pardon my language.)

The writing was fantastic and very realistic. I haven’t read such an amazing and thrilling book in a while, which is why I highly recommend this read to you! Let your senses be overwhelmed and keep going until you reach the end and won’t know right from wrong. There we’ll meet again. See ya.

One last thing… I’m still not sure how I like the route the author took with Verity’s ending and I also wasn’t very keen on a few things that Lowen did, but I guess this was partly what made this story so twisted and good. It definitely kept my mind spinning. ...more

I generally love this genre of novel — a little dark - a little mind bendy — with a good plot twist. Obviously, this is a cult classic, and has been on everybody’s list for years, but the summary never piqued my interest. I’m currently on vacation and have been on a months long reading slump, so I decided to give it a shot.
