Fabulous set up for what I'm sure will be an amazing series. Great plot, writing, and characters. An incredible story that leaves you with a million unanswered questions and not knowing who, if anyone, you cant trust.

I loved Nathan as a narrator and sometimes in the early chapters I would tear up just because I felt so horrible for him and the way he gets treated just for being born who he is. There are some graphic depictions of violence so if you're not into that you might want to sk 4.5 stars

I loved Nathan as a narrator and sometimes in the early chapters I would tear up just because I felt so horrible for him and the way he gets treated just for being born who he is. There are some graphic depictions of violence so if you're not into that you might want to skip this book. I loved the chapters that were written in second person POV, it was used very sparingly and I thought it gave you a deeper look into what Nathan has had to endure and his whole state of mind.

I loved Nathan's friendship with Gabriel, even though it came on late in the book. I'm wondering if (view spoiler). But I loved that whole bit of the book when they were getting to know and trust each other.

I enjoyed all the flashbacks and explanations into Nathan and his parents pasts. This book covers basically Nathan's entire 17 years of life and it was never boring to me. I loved the witch aspect and seeing how different the White Witches are from the few Black Witches we've met. The range of different abilities witches can have was also really neat. I wonder what Nathan's gift will be. Probably something awesome. I hope we get to see more of Arran and Deborah in the future as well. I loved their sibling relationship and how they stood by Nathan no matter what people said.

So as you can tell I loved Half Bad. You can definitely tell it's the first book of a series because it lays a lot of ground work but unlike some first books I didn't feel like it was drawn out or too heavy on world building or explanations of what's going on. I would say that it feels more like you're along for this crazy journey rather than just getting force fed a bunch of facts so that you understand how the world works. I'd say this book is well worth the hype it's been getting and I would encourage anyone to pick it up. Don't listen to whoever is saying it's the next Hunger Games or whatever, this book is totally unique and I know this whole series is going to blow people away. ...more
