4.5 – I loved this!! It’s unique and gripping and SO fantastic! I suspected that (view spoiler), but otherwise this story was incredibly unpredictable and twisty, with some terrifyingly scary moments. I LOVED the characters, too--fascinating and original and often very gray. I especially loved Tana and Gavriel, but I had other favorites in Valentina, Jameson, Pearl, Pauline, and Lucien ((view spoiler) 4.5 – I loved this!! It’s unique and gripping and SO fantastic! I LOVED the characters, too--fascinating and original and often very gray. I especially loved Tana and Gavriel, but I had other favorites in Valentina, Jameson, Pearl, Pauline, and Lucien ((view spoiler)). The characters were striking, deep, and wonderful, with lots of personality! People to love and people to hate--and their fates in this book were interesting and very tough to call... And I love Holly Black’s fantastic writing--smart, sharp, vivid, and fresh, with lots of dark humor, shocking moments, horrifying surprises, and haunting romance. The romance was deliciously swoon-worthy, dangerous, and unpredictable! I also loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter and the alternating chapters between Tana’s present and her past, other POV’s, vampire history/information, etc.--I liked how the details and story gradually unfolded this way. It was all fascinating and addictive--I was completely drawn into this story and the world Ms. Black created! And I rather liked the (view spoiler) at the end of the book, too--it made me hope and wonder and wish... :) Overall, this was a fantastic, gripping, good read--I didn’t want to put it down! LOVED it!!

This book does have some scary horror, a little bit of mild swearing, a few mature topics, and some intense situations (including quite a bit of gory, bloody violence). There’s not much in the way of sexual content, but there are a couple of rather steamy moments . Because of all this, I’d probably recommend this book for a more mature audience of older teens or adults--not really young teens.

I didn't really expect to like this! You know me and vampires, there are but a few stories out there about them that I actually love. And now we can add this to the excruciatingly slowly growing list.

Set in a world where vampires are know and revered, Holly created a world that is both terrifying and exciting. It reminds me of Warm Bodies, where a wall has been created to keep the monsters out, except this wall is to keep the monsters in.

I really enjoyed this book and its take on vampires. There was none of the mushy, fawning over how beautiful they are type stuff (so refreshing!) and a lot more of the reality of what it would be like to live in a world where they exist. The main character Tana was a great mix of tough and insecure. She was very human and not just a perfect character in a book.
