Singe is the first book in Martinez's new Guardian Protection series. This first installment introduced a lot of new characters and as I was telling my bestie I already can’t wait for their books! Aly is easily one of my favorite authors!

We first meet and Jude and within the first few pages I was in love. Jude is a police officer who is asked to respond to a call off duty. This first installment introduced a lot of new characters and as I was telling my bestie I already can’t wait for their books! Aly is easily one of my favorite authors!

We first meet and Jude and within the first few pages I was in love. Jude is a police officer who is asked to respond to a call off duty. His willingness to go above and beyond changes in his life forever. A guy who was on his way to the top loses it all when placed in a no win situation. Now it’s four years later and he has rebuilt his life. Jude has accepted a new job back in Chicago, the city that still haunts him, but this is a once in a lifetime job.

Rhion’s life hasn’t been rainbows and sunshine either. However, when you first meet her you can feel this bright light that just radiates from her. Even while reading it it was hard to imagine Rhion had any hold ups or issues. She is sassy, loyal, and giving. Everyone gravitates toward her because she appears to be fun and carefree. Her and Jude meet due to her involvement in Guardian Protection.

What we quickly learn is the things aren’t always as they seem. Jude and Rhion both have so many demons they are battling, but it’s better to fight together than alone. First, their connection was off the chains hot, which is always nice when reading but I like to feel. The feels is something Aly has never failed to deliver for me. My heart broke for Rhion and Jude, it broke for their past and their current struggles. It broke while watched them try to navigate a relationship amongst the chaos.

Aly’s words completely came alive for me and I felt so much for Rhion and Jude. I also loved all the other characters and how they played a role in helping these two work through their issues. This story had me so excited to turn the page and like I said I am already anticipating the next books in the series.

Aly is one of the authors whose books I will pick up sight unseen and all. Interestingly enough, her cover and blurb is what caught my eyes the very first time I picked up her book.

With this book, whether I want to or not, the cover definitely hooked me right in. Hello! You gotta be blind to not fall in love with that! No? It’s just me? Anyways, the cover alone was enough for me. Did I pay attention to the blurb? No, not really. Like I said, this is Aly after all. And because I didn’t read the blurb, I thought it actually worked out for me.

On that note, I must say the first 15% threw me off a bit. There I was wondering who these nasty people are and what parts they play. Then I was wondering who all these alpha dudes are and what parts they play. Then the story opened up and in true Aly form, you see the angts-y passionate pull b/w Jude and Rhion.

Jude and Rhion’s past history is brimming with scars and regrets. When they met again, there was much to be said to one another. Unexpectedly, in their own way, they’ve become each other’s salvation.

Rhion, the secret writer that she is, paid homage to other popular writers and tropes in the current romance scene, which was cute. She’s got her demons to fight but she didn’t lose her humor, luckily, and her quirky behaviour. Jude can be intense at times but he also made me laugh. And he made me swoon. The heat b/w these 2 is like a given, yowza! But one thing that stood out in my head is their humorous interaction. This one small scene about the biscuits just makes me smile every time I think of it. Don’t ask my why!

The suspense part nicely tied in their past. I had my suspicions but it still surprised me. That bonus POV definitely piqued my interest.

As the start of a new series, it is a standalone but it also introduces a lot of characters who will get their stories later. Alpha dudes who I can already tell will melt my heart, eek!

At this rate, my love for Aly’s books just keeps growing exponentially. I’ve yet to read a book from her that misses the mark. It’s a lot of pressure to put on an author, I realize that, but I think she’s up to it. So just putting it out there… is all… ...more

I find it a little slow to get into but when I did bam!! The story hits you in all directions.

We meet Rhion and Jude who are both victims of the same fire they have scars from that night that haunts them both. Rhion has a different take on the night and sees Jude as her hero. His take, he's the loser who couldn't save her from getting hurt.

They meet up again as he's the new hire for Guardian Protection, Rhion is one of their client.

It’s amazing how many perspectives and conclusions can be created from the same experience, and even though all involved may see those moments as life-changing, the variants of those changes and what they do to those who experience them, can force some to hide, others to act out, and still others to live with regret and shame.

Rhion Park and Jude Levitt have scars from the night they were almost burned alive, and while their physical scars serve as reminders of what they almost lost and how much It’s amazing how many perspectives and conclusions can be created from the same experience, and even though all involved may see those moments as life-changing, the variants of those changes and what they do to those who experience them, can force some to hide, others to act out, and still others to live with regret and shame.

Rhion Park and Jude Levitt have scars from the night they were almost burned alive, and while their physical scars serve as reminders of what they almost lost and how much they suffered due to the actual flames that encased them, their internal scars are far more severe and prevent them from completely moving forward with their lives.

For the past four years, Rhion has become a captive of her fear and the arsonist’s actions, and while she’s covered the scars on her body with beautiful images that free her skin from the pain she’s endured, there’s nothing she can do to lessen the flames that prevent her from fully living…until her fictional hero becomes a part of her reality.

For the past four years, Jude has lived with constant nightmares of that fateful night, and in each one, his beautiful butterfly burns up because he’s unable to set her free, but when he begins work for Guardian Protection Agency, he has a second chance at saving Rhion, which might also allow him to save himself.

Both Rhion and Jude are complex characters whose broken pieces continue to fracture until fate brings them back together, and while they struggle to move past their shared experience, they’re the only ones who can heal each other and provide one another with the strength and courage necessary to rise above the flames and realize that what burns within both of them will turn their fears, guilt, and regret into ashes.

Rhion has to be one of my favorite Aly Martinez’s characters. She may be little but boy is she mighty. Her demeanor is endearing because she owns her idiosyncrasies, and while she may be embarrassed by them, at times, she knows there are reasons for her brand of crazy, which only makes me like her more. Jude may help Rhion come alive and have the courage to fully experience her life beyond her apartment walls, but it’s her inner strength that carries her through all of the turmoil and torture she faces at the hands of her adversary.

It took me a bit to see past Jude’s tortured persona…don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why Jude is who he is and why he torments himself with the events of that night, but he is so not the anti-hero he seems to think he is, so his reactions during his initial conversations with Rhion were frustrating. But I think that’s exactly what Aly wanted her readers to feel about Jude…he was essentially a work-in-progress and his transformation could not occur without the raw reality of his insecurities and anger at the circumstances that brought Rhion into his life and ultimately sent his life spiraling.

Singe is has a great blend of emotion, steam, and suspense, and it’s a fantastic beginning to Aly Martinez’s Guardian Protection series, and I can’t wait for the other protectors to get their stories!
