1865 Yo Joed, C. welcome. Please don't leave any interdimensional gates standing open. We lost a couple of members that way...

1865 I think it's a free country and that's great...now I'm going to the kitchen to put some ice in my Coke.

1865 ...okay, not sure where to start. I have read Tolkien so the mobs can stand down (no torches or pitchforks, you know).

I agree about the book Starship Troopers but disagree about the movie. I'm all but sure that I heard the sound of Heinlein spinning in his grave over that movie and I'm really ticked at the fact so many people probably think it reflects the book.

Glad you're around. The cat that owns me sends regards to the cat who owns you.

1865 Hi all. Elizabeth, try the Harry Dresden books. Modern world urban fantasy, action snarky humor. Think you might like it. The first is Storm Front.

1865 Like the character, though it's not done very well very often. Let's say that's what I "aspire" to.

1865 Actually I think Flagg was in the US "this time". It's mentioned that the flu was world-wide and RF says he intends to spread from LV. (view spoiler). The RF character appears in many books and many places. Were King English I'm sure RF would have been in the UK. Were he French then France etc. I'd guess he wrote what he knew. I mean there are apocalyptic books placed all over the world, but in general they probably take place in the "homeland" of the writer.

1865 See, this is what I was talking about what I was being careful about not escalating the discussion. King says the book is about a "dark Christianity". neither I nor King are arguing about one religion over another. I only said that my concerned was that people might see the book as an actual picture of Christianity. To get offended or upset is escalating things over something the discussion was not about.

There are novels out there told from an Buddhist point of view. There are novels told from an Islamic point of view. There are novels from Hindu point of view. There are novels from dozens of religious points of view and getting concerned that they don't all reflect all points of view is pointless.

I'm not condemning anyone with any religious point of view. My original comment was simply that the book didn't actually reflect a Christian world view though it's called a "dark Christian" Novel...

Please don't get upset that King didn't include Ganesha or whatever it's not what I was talking about.

1865 That gets into a longer answer if I actually do begin to deal with the "Old Testament" view of God. that's another misunderstood viewpoint as the same God is God in both Testaments.
If you want I'll go into it though maybe others might not be as interested and you realize that even among Christians there are disagreements.

In short (view spoiler)

Still as I noted, it's King's story and he's not trying to present anything but a story.

1865 I don't want to start an argument, that said I'll explain my meaning. If anyone disagrees i get that. I guess most of you know I'm a pastor.

(view spoiler)

Now the novel is just that, a novel so I don't take issue with it. King has the right to tell his story. It's just I hope people aren't confused into thinking it is about Christianity.
