Well, a newspaper looks for sensational headlines, not everyday events.

Example:
Dog bites man - a boring common occurrence.
Man bites dog - hey, that's different!

Of course some papers have been accused of inventing stories, presumably due to a lack of genuine interesting ones.

The headline is totally plausible, although the scenario has low probability. But then millions of wives have not fallen for a hypnotist, Chinese or otherwise. Of course with a hypnotist one could suspect foul play.

Oh dear! He meant well. Being a romantic is one thing, but being a hopeless one is not wise.
