Powell's is in the Pearl District. The cross streets for the downtown location are Burnside and NW 10th Ave (Powell's technical book store is just a couple blocks east of there). The Streetcar stops right by it. (Burnside is the street that divides N and S, and the beginning of Alphabet city and the store is on the N side of the street). Ask anyone downtown and they'll be able to tell you. It's very easy to find because as Tiffany said, it takes over an entire city block.
It's not only the biggest independent bookstore in the world, but their selection of new and used books is amazing. It definitely has a better vibe than the major chain bookstores, and their staff can answer almost any question you have about books. I would recommend going to the downtown one.
I do the same thing. It is very rare that I leave a bookstore without at least 5-10 books. And if that is not bad enough, I also buy quite a few online every month. *sigh* I guess there are worst addictions to have.
I never really thought about what makes me pick up a certain book over another. I guess it all depends on my mood, how much time I have, where I am at that particular moment (home vs. somewhere else), what music I am listening to, etc. And when it comes to series, on most series I have to read the latest book that comes out either the day of release, or that week (I know, I know, very impatient). ;p
Great choice! I agree with Seth though, let's have her buried in books. If not, it's still a great choice. :P
I ended up finally giving in and picked up Dune by Frank Herbert (don't know why I kept resisting in the first place). And a couple of Isaac Asimov books that I left at my mom's house in Europe. I can't wait to start re-reading those.
You got it!He's introduced in Fellowship of Fear, which is the first book in the series, and is a recurring character. : )
Oops Seth! See my answer above. It looks like Sean posted his answer to you while I was writing a reply for you. :p
You mean the evil Sorcerer of Tund, from the Star Wars books? One of my favorite classic Sci-fi books is The Adventures of Lando Calrissian by L. Neil Smith. :)On to:
Edward Malone
A few quirks, hmmmm....Like Lori, I tend to buy all the books in a series (no matter how long it is-althoug I usually try to limit myself to no more that 10 books per series at a time, considering that I buy several series at once). If I find out that I bought a book that is not the first, I can't very rarely read it unless I buy and read all the books from the start up until that particular book.
I use the local county library a lot, but I rarely borrow a book, because I know that if I like a book I will have to buy it anyway. And I have to be able to read an excerpt before I buy, because if I don't like the writing style of the author I can't read the book.
And most times, I have to have music playing in the background, or some noise around me. I can't really read (or sleep) in complete silence.
I never lend out books, because I have lost too many that way. I will go out and buy a book that someone wants to borrow to give it to them rather than lend it. There is only one, maybe two friends that are an exception to that rule.
