35559 I just added Hot and Sour Suspects (A Noodle Shop Mystery, #8) by Vivien Chien for the UNESCO in title. It might also work for the red, white, and green task (which may be a more urgent need), but there's very little red (found on the spoon and the left side of the bowl), so I felt a little better about UNESCO. Feel free to move it if you'd like. These are pretty quick reads for me, so if life doesn't throw any curveballs, it shouldn't take me long to finish.

I read the Kamogawa book just before this challenge started. It's a sweet, slower paced read. I hope you enjoy it.

Great Big Beautiful Life has watermelon in text! Page 25, she wears watermelon earrings. I won't claim it yet in case anyone else reading it is closer to finished.

I think Julie Chan consumed every fruit from guava to pomegranate, but no watermelon. 😢

Sometimes it's just not the right time for a certain book. I am not very engaged in Great Big Beautiful Life. I'll finish it. The writing is fine and I'm getting close to the end. I just don't care about the characters very much. At a different time, I'm sure it would be fine.

35559 If anyone wants to claim "First word of the text is One," please feel free! I have a book that works and I will read it, but someone else may get to one first... especially since I'm slowing my pace a bit between now and the 17th. 😂

35559 I don't mind the book cap. I'm really close to hitting mine, but I had 16+ hours of flight delays that helped a lot. I am not afraid of flying, but I am really nervous about sleeping in airports. I tried, I just can't do it. So I was just reading from 3 p.m. until 4 a.m. 😂
35559 DQs Day 1
Chapters 1 to 7

1.) Emily Henry is a popular contemporary romance author and a fair few of her books have been previous NBRC BOM selections. Any expectations for this book going in?

I really enjoyed Funny Story, but really didn't enjoy Happy Place at all. I struggle with characters that are a little too caught up in themselves (lacking awareness of others), so I'm hoping this won't be the case here.

2.) What are your first impressions of Alice? And sending that drink to Hayden?
Alice is dangerously close to what I would describe as toxic positivity. People are allowed to feel other emotions. I can also appreciate that she tries to see the best in a given situation. We'll see how it plays out...

3.) Would you agree to the month long trial or tell Margaret she's a nutter and move on to something else? Why do you think Margaret is doing things this way?
I would probably try to make it work. It sounds like it's a dream interview. Not sure on the motivation yet. Maybe she just wants to get to know them better, but there's probably something more to it.

4.) After learning a few tidbits about Hayden's family and how he grew up, did you opinion change a bit on his character?
Not really? I suppose I softened a little. We still don't know very much about him though.

35559 I'm happy to read the Julie Chan book. I haven't been on since last night, so need to catch up!

In other news...I just got selected for jury duty for the month of July. I'll probably hit my max number of monthly books by July 10th. 🤦

35559 You captains are impressively fast! I saw that we had a new cheese, so I started going through my most recent read to look up name spellings (the book takes place in Finland) and one of you had beaten me to it! I feel bad for not adding it yesterday. Thanks for picking up the slack.

Thanks for clarifying! Just wanted to double-check. I'm searching my shelves for a VODKA title, but not having much luck. I found one, but I don't think I can read it right now. Tooo emotionally heavy for me at this moment.

35559 I claimed read a book published in June, but I see in Mel's message above we need to read a book published in October. Just wanting to clarify that those are two different tasks and not a typo. I'm sure it's two tasks. I'm only checking because I'm about to finish the June book and do have an October book to read. 😊
