35559 Done!

I have learned not to poke a whale.....

But seriously, the whale confrontation was only like 15% of the book. I can see why this is mostly considered a book of metaphors rather than an adventure book. I got more out of Ismael's rants on sailors writing their will whenever they get pissed off, and how the lowest officer is always starved than I did from Ahab and his quest.

What has been everyone's favorite part? I think mine might be the cook preaching to the sharks.

35559 Totally okay. I'm starting Way of Kings (gulp), so I was iffy on two large fantasy at the same time.

35559 Scale on cover could be any book with a dragon on it, right? Since all dragons have scales. I'll see if I can hunt one down thats short.
35559 I am still reading. I actually almost done! I have like 70 pages left, so I was waiting until i had a wrapping up thoughts. How are you guys feeling about the pacing of the book? Most of my thoughts are that I enjoy the book, but as a novel the pacing is ridiculous. So many segues and a weird lack of big white whale....

And what about Megan's books? Are they all still looking for spots? I'm sure we could cover a lot with tho..."

I'm reading it, but I'm still waiting on it from the library
35559 I'm about 40% of the way in, and we have whales! I'm weirdly fond of Ishmael's rants at this point.
35559 I briefly thought about continuing to the next book, but then got a case of book dread, so I think my minds made up to stop. lol
35559 So there are some halarious chapters on the taxonimy of whales you guys can look forward too.....I spent most of them trying to remember what the modern taxonimy is.

35559 If this looks good to anyone (someone was reading it on my feed) I think it might fit the lollipop requirement. I'd read it, but it's not my thing......

The Not So Perfect Mother by Kerry Fisher
35559 ~20% in and Ahab as made his appearance. I'm officially intrigued. I am actually pretty surprised by the depiction of various religious people in this book. You can tell Melville had some thoughts in that area. I wonder how it was viewed when it came out. I know it was a smash hit, but I might have to look up if it was controversial.
35559 This book is much more funny than I expected. Also, so far (10%)more pre-slashy than intense whale hunt. lol
35559 First lesson- Don't try to read the extracts as you are going to bed. Instant goodnight. Switching is up to the audiobook, so hopefully wont snooze too much today. lol

35559 I finished this, and then promptly forgot to post. I did find the ending rushed. I was also expecting more to be added to the story. Like maybe a chapter or so of their reappearance. It just made the story seem more unnecessary to end it with what we already knew.

Pro tip- Speed up your audiobook speed a bit (1.2-1.3x to start then increase as comfortable). A lot of narrator pacing is very slow and deliberate and it allows your mind to wander and lose track of the story.

35559 Moby Dick, which I'm starting today, is like 750 pages, so it will work for one of our long books.
35559 Everybody ready?

35559 I've finished some I haven't had a chance to post yet, but tonight I'll get caught up. I get to start Moby-Dick or, The Whale by Herman Melville for a buddy read tonight.
35559 I'm half way through, and I can see how this going to be very rushed. They basically just got to the Moor, and I know a ton has to happen from this point on. I feel like one of the issues is that we already know the major points of the story in super condensed form, so this book feels more like we are getting the expanded cliffnotes rather than a complete narrative.

On the other hand, I just don't know how it could have been expanded and still match the first book, and I loved having all that time devoted to setting up those creepy parents (#stilltherealmonsters) so I can't complain about the pacing in the beginning.

35559 I'm on Chapter 4 and as they look up at the stars I have a random question. How do you guys think stars/planets relate to fairylands? Is it like an alternate universe but same planets, or do you think all the fairy lands are on different planets. Random Sci-Fi thoughts in my fantasy. lol
