35559 33. I'm actually not a huge fan of him. Besides the morality issues, he seems kind of detached from everything but solving cases, and even that seems more about his failures than their suffering.

34.Were you surprised to learn that David, not Eric, was the killer and kidnapper?
No, I had pegged him early on. For some reason it's always the characters that appear randomly and fade away (only to pop in at certain scenes without drawing too much focus) that are the killers. I tend to spot them when that happens.

35. I didn't really understand that scene. It seemed like it was there more to learn about Ruth than to resolve David being the killer. Also, it was an odd way to kill him off.

36. I think there might have been too many murderous crazy people in this book. The thought of the him as a Viking Berserker was all I could picture. His death didn't really make too much of an impact on me.

37. He's at least not a murderous type of crazy (yet). I can't say that I like him any more than before, but it's something. Being involved in that idiotic letter conspiracy still is a huge strike.

38. I think it was supposed to make the next book more appealing, but I just didn't understand why that was in here. It seemed to "read the next book" to me.

39. Did you enjoy the "Crossing Places"? Why or why not?
I thought the writing was entertaining, but by the time of the last pages all the characters were so morally bankrupt I couldn't imagine reading another one. It's kind of like a soap opera ran into my mystery novel.

What did you think of Neverwhere? This reminds me that I should start Anansi Boys at some point. It's been neglected on my shelf for far too long.
35559 I started it. I'm about half way. I really like it so far.

35559 We aren't actually far from the rest of the teams at all. It's just the one real outlier. I kind of want to shake her hand.

35559 Ha, or 18 million conflicting buddy reads that I keep on signing up for... I have issues ;)

35559 I'll be starting with book one in a couple of days. I'll jump in when I do. I typically can't resist binging on their work (Kate Daniel's was a book a day for a week). Anyone else have this "problem"?
35559 I just got this in from the library it looks good. I'm in :)

I really liked it. I'm sad the third one isn't out yet, so I can't just binge the entire series. Have you read the second?

35559 Finished The Thousand Names (528 pages).

I'm also updating the spreadsheets to here.
35559 I finished this last week ago, but I'm writing based on my notes from this point.

16. What are your feelings when an author, for whatever the reason, feels that it is a detrimental part of the story-line to cause harm & even death to a beloved pet?
This was a very random part of the story to me. It seemed out of place, especially since she went back to the house pretty quickly. I'm pretty sure I would still be a puddle on the floor clutching my poor remaining cat at that point.

17. Any thoughts on why the ex-boyfriend shows up?
I'm pretty sure he is supposed to be a counter to Nelson. It's a bit dull, though.

18. What is the significance with the meeting between David & Peter? What did you make of the non-mention of who Peter is to Ruth when she introduces them?
I think she just doesn't know what to say. Introducing your Ex to people you are just getting to know is kind of awkward in general.

19. Do you think Malone/Cathbad is guilty of murder? Or is there more to the story than he has let on knowing
I had a definitely idea about who the murderer was. I tend to pick someone early in the book, and then basically see if I'm right. Cathbad definitely wasn't my pick.

20. What did you think of the connection between the Henderson's & Malone/Cathbad?
I had no idea. It was one of the major surprises in the book.

21. Why is Eric so distrustful of the police, especially Det. Nelson? He sure does a convincing job of trying to sway Ruth to his way of thinking in regards to the police. Any thoughts?
I thought it was a weird way to portray a charecter that up till now was referenced in glowing terms. I think it was just to throw suspicion his way. This book did that will a lot of the characters.

22. What are your thoughts of Ruth's discovery. Did you think to draw the lines between the points like she did & did they lead you to the original dig site?
I was surprised. I still can't really visualize it, but it was a nice plot point. Interesting that he had no hesitation about taking a full team out there when she said her theory.

23. What are your thoughts on the events between Ruth & Nelson? Did you see things progressing between them like they did?
Actually, that made me uncomfortable. Not so much that it happened, but that they were so caviler about it. Especially, since he mentioned cheating before as a throw away thought. I didn't like what it said about the characters morals that they would dismiss it that easily.

24. What do you make of all the questions from Shona? Do you feel she is asking just to be nosy or is she sincere in regards to the events of the past day?
I never could get a grip on her character. She seemed out of place. I couldn't tell either way.

25. Do you feel that the two missing children & the death of one to be connected? or could it be that there are 2 different people involved?
I thought it was definitely connected. As I said, I already had a person pegged as the murderer before this, and so far the character fitfor both crimes.

35559 Finished Old Man's War
35559 So, I actually read all of this, because it's hard for me to put down a book with this kind of subject matter before I go to bed. Better just to resolve the plot, then start thinking about it as I'm trying to ignore creaking floorboards. I did stop and take notes alone the way, so I'll answer like I was a good girl ;P

1. I liked it. It really set up more of a gritty/real life style to the book. It was well matched with the perspectives of the character, and her (self described) imperfect nature.

2. Actually, I took some Archaeology classes in college, so I was more worried about this being a crazy unrealistic representation.

3. Yeah, this kind of threw me off in the beginning. It was kind of strange to have all three brought up so clearly, considering most of the other aspects of the story or more unclear/distorted. I'm never a huge fan of plotlines like this, but admittedly I read a lot of fantasy where you know the science lover is going to get quite the shake up.

4.
Okay, I actually know the answer now. It wasn't what I thought while reading this section....

35559 I finished The Crossing Places. I had to, because I started it at night without realizing that it was a bit dark. I am going to enjoy discussing it, because I definitely had some mixed feelings about it.
35559 I'm fine with any reading order :)

35559 I freaking love that book. The sequels (I think) are totally worth it. Some don't like the second, but it's hard to argue against BAMF lady pirates.

35559 That spreadsheet is super cool. It looks like they spent a lot of time on it.

Last night I finished India Black (296 pages)to detox from Steppenwolf confusion. I'd recommend it for a fast, fun read.
