Like Chikletz, my favorite fictional character has always been Tom Sawyer. I was a bit of a tomboy growing up, and I remember feeling a deep kinship with the adventure seeker. Plus, I grew up right along the Mississippi River, so that really made me feel we had a lot in common!

My favorite contemporary book would have to be "The Memory Keeper's Daughter". It's such a great story because the main character is so flawed, but also you can sympathize with the that character. The television movie was nowhere near as good as the book!
