I can understand your points, Sonya. I'm a bit different, though, in my views. I love music and I do like it when they are referenced. I do get tired of it when the author continually talks about songs. I also like poetry. I don't pretend to understand some of the deep stuff but it sounds pretty. lol
Certain songs can give me insight as to the character of a person. They can also set a mood. Songs can make you feel happy, sad, etc...
I can see how certain songs can date a book but there are songs that are classic and timeless and never get old. I feel that way about a lot of classic rock from the 70s and 80s. But I do think music can enhance a certain scene and can help us to relate to certain characters when they love or hate songs we feel the same way about.
I have looked a few up on YouTube. Mostly more recent songs I'm not familiar with.
Some authors reference songs in their stories. Does this enhance the story for you? Give you a better insight into the personality and character of the hero and/or heroine? Do you find yourself on youtube a lot when reading some books?
