Actually enjoy 19th-century style and diction although reading Rob Roy slowly- great book but Sir Walter has a Scottish character and uses phonetic dialogue when he speaks- and so much of it is almost impossible to understand- so have to use context clues and replies from lead character (not Rob Roy BTW! on page 150 and Mr. Roy has yet to show up!)

Much appreciated Howard! I cannot better sum up the film then you have done in your superb post!

Interesting that when you read reviews on Amazon- so many who thought John Carter was a dud because of poor publicty. marketing and box office- were shocked at how much they enjoyed the film. I still say- the title did the film in- Most folks who go to CGI 3D films go because of Title and marketing- very few I would assume pay attention to critics (I know I utterly ignore critics as they often will praise a terribly boring "art'film to validate their status as"experts" on movies..most could not make a stick drawing- much less a film...see Roger Ebert's sole disaster of a screenplay- Beyond The Valley of the Dolls!!!"

Had Disney marketed the film as an amazing visual experience with an intelligent script- a proper title- you are so correct- John carter is both banal and utterly garners no interest for the passing moviegoer- and also played up the ERB angle "John Carter Of Mars..from the man who gave the world Tarzan" I truly feel it would have been a box office smash and we would be looking forward to many sequels- sadly - not to be-
I must say- the bluray looks amazing- just about as good as in the theatres- have not seen the DVD.

Thanks again Howard for super post!
