1952 French novel The Bridge over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle. Just saw it again on bluray..one of those films I can watch over and over

Great character turn by Alan Hale Sr in that film! Raft was famous for the roles he turned down..Maltese Falcon, High Sierra..some say Casablanca ..but heard conflicting stories on that one.

Robert wrote: "Tough pick, but I would have to say Shawshank Redemption, the adaptation of Stephen King's novella of the same name."GREAT FILM.great cast..I really feel the superb character actor Bob Gunton, who played the Prision Warden in that film was outstanding!!!
Camille wrote: "I haven't been able to pick my favorite. For some reason, the film version always falls just a tad bit short for me. But if I had to choose one I think "To Kill A Mockingbird" was pretty good."agree..so rare for afilm to be able to capture a book in it's entirety, Camille. Even "To Kill...Mockingbird" left out scenes and characters from the novel..yet what parts of the novel thay did film perfectly caught the mood and essense of the novel.I really feel that the narration by an adult Scout that the film carried over was a major key to bridging the book to the film.

Only issue I can see is if writer allowed his own personal views to affect journalistic descriptions. The "cynical insight" part of your synopsis raises a flag. As long as Hatings was up front about what was opinion and what was fact.. I would have no issue
