Exactly Marja! There was no indication that this book was simply Part 1 of a series. I really felt manipulated and hoodwinked by the writer and publisher

very fascinating post Helena! extremely interesting. I find that historical films like KINGDOM OF HEAVEN take on new meaning since my return from Israel. Having actually been to Jerusalem and Jaffa makes the film that much more affecting to me.

This is a peeve I just encountered! Having decided to read Robin Cook's latest book,
I assumed it would be a self contained novel. At over 400 pages, there certainly was enough space! I felt like the writer was being quite manipulative with the readers in that the book had no ending!!..a cliffhanger yes..it is as if this was a concerted attempt to make the reader have to buy the next book in order to find out what happens to the lead character.(Fortunately the lead character is the rudest, most unlikable character I have encountered..I was actually rooting for the horrific bad guys!)..yet the fact remains that the book was marketed as a stand alone..There are many books that are part of a series, a trilogy ect..and they are clearly marketed that way (Volume 1, Book 1...) this is not the case here. I find it quite irritating to have read over 400 pages and then have the book just end...to be continued. A a major peeve!!

Natasha (Diarist) wrote: "I'm reading Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie as I've just discovered her and I find the stories so clever. I'm also reading The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde because it's bonkers."ah..your first Agatha Christie book!! I envy you, Natasha! I have read almost all of her mysteries and they are amazing!! Poirot is my favorite but every one of her books is so so clever and entertaining..I don't think I ever guessed the ending right even once!
I have been reading all of the posts here..checking out all the links..just amazed as usual at the quality and diversity!!

Thanks Ken!
Torn was so damn good as Artie on Larry Sanders Show.
I believe he was nominated for an Emmy every year it was on..Love that show! Torn and Jeffrey Tambor (Hey Now!) really were the heart of the show!
I finished Nano..all 400 plus pages..I enjoyed it overall yet it had one very major flaw. I do not want to spoil the book so I will simply say that it is an ending that I cannot imagine anyone NOT finding extremely irritating and even somewhat manipulative. Just read any of the many reviews if you want to know what I am talking about..just do not want to give any spoilers..needless to say..this is NOT a book to buy...borrow-perhaps..buy..NO!!

I love mysteries and thrillers set in international settings
I love Robin Cook..reading his new book..always entertaining although I am quite surprised he brought back the lead character from his last book. She is one of the most unpleasant and unlikable lead characters I have ever read! Book is quite good though
