The October theme read page is up and running. The theme is any book or books of your choice that covers Napoleons Marshals:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I have three books that I am considering for this theme read:
Marshal Ney: The Romance And The Real by Raymond Horricks
March of the Twenty-Six by R.F. Delderfield
The Baton in the Knapsack by Laurence Currie
Hi Peter, welcome to the group, its only a small but pretty friendly group so I hope you will feel at home.
Certainly sounds like the British spent a lot of money on these French refugees. Another very informative post, thanks MR9.
Alexander Kent is a fairly prolific writer, glad to hear you are enjoying this series of his novels.
Another great post MR9, I really liked this statement; "Many of them had descended suddenly from opulence to indigence with no apprenticeship to poverty. They wanted to be careful but, having no knowledge of the value of money, allowed it to slip through their fingers."
I managed to snag a hardback copy along with his other book on Carnot a few years back. I haven't read either of them yet.
That was a pretty amazing effort! I must confess to have not read about that before in any of my Napoleonic titles, thanks for sharing those details MR9.
Betsy wrote: "Thanks to Scott's info, I now have access to the two Atteridge books so that's a load off my mind. Now I just need for my back to improve, and I will be set for October."Glad you found Atteridge's two books, I am sure you will enjoy them. Was this the book on Berthier you were trying to get hold of:
By Command of the Emperor: A life of Marshal Berthier by S.J. Watson
Betsy wrote: "I know I have read the Chandler book, but I have several others, which I mainly bought to read the Davout section. 😚 So I could finish one of those. Unfortunately, I have some physical problems rig..."Fingers crossed you are well and able to browse your shelves and join in with a good book :)
I really enjoyed Andrew Hilliard Atteridge's books on Ney and Murat and have this book of his (1909 edition) on Napoleon's Brothers:
Napoleon's Brothers by Andrew Hilliard Atteridge

Very funny! :)

That's pretty interesting MR9, nice picture of the French Chapel.
Manray9 wrote: "This afternoon I've started --
The French Exiles, 1789-1815 by Margery Weiner."That sounds like a pretty interesting book MR9 and on a subject not much covered normally. I hope its a good account.
Two good posts there Scott with valid points in both, especially in regards Larry. I would have thought both Suvorov and Kutuzov with their love for Mother Russia and the Czar would have fought against the ideals of communism under Stalin if they were around in those times, not saying that they still wouldn't have been schemers in their own way :)
