MJ’s comments from the What's the Name of That Book??? group.

I didn't think it was that old, but looking at some of his published dates, it could be. Dean Koontz has a book where the mother starts getting messages from her son who died on a school trip. I read it a long time ago, so I can't remember the name, but think she might connect with another parent from the trip. Being DK's, there's PRN. Think the kids name was Danny/Daniel? And there's something about him writing his name on a chalkboard for her to see...?

It's obviously not the one you are looking for, and I just googled and it didn't look like the idea had been taken directly from any book, but you might like it anyway...

There was a tv show called Awake. It was based on a cop and his wife & son. There was a car accident and his wife died, leaving him with his son. But when he sleeps, he wakes up with his son dead and just him and his wife. He wears a green and red wrist band (each a fav colour of his wife/son) to remind him of which reality he is in. He also has a shrink in each reality... who both assure him that 'this is the real reality'.

Can barely remember this book now, but I keep thinking it was one of those 'everyone loved it' for some reason... And I really didn't. Just read my review, and remember a bit of it now... can't believe I still gav it 3stars. Maybe I clicked the wrong spot!

Oh, I did love CoaS... but hated the movie. Saying that, if I had the books in front of me again, I'm not sure if I'd read them again... and I re-read some real crap ones :/. Might be for the same reason as you - I could LMAO for it once, but might just be irritating the second go round.

Stupidly, I bought World without End at the same time... and in another moment I'm not proud of - cause I already knew how much I hated the book - I bought the PotE DVD set too, thinking it must be better than the book... But no... can't decide which was worse, the written word, or the bad acting and sets of the written work :/

The Pillars of the Earth... so, so, very BAD!

Oh, and wasn't really a fan of Pride and Prejudice the book either. Def didn't read the characters the same way they come across in the movies (and I love most of the movies).

And the one about the mice...? With their different territories... The larder mice and the library mice? I just couldn't get into it at all.

The h shows up at the H's castle with her younger brother in the middle of a raging storm. The house is in an uproar cause the H's wife is giving birth, and no one will attend her because the H had a curse laid on him years ago - by a witch he pissed off... His wife would never give him a child. This is his third wife, and they all died in labour (including the one in labour now). Everyone is afraid of the curse rubbing off on them. The h agrees to help and walks in to find the wife and baby just dead and the H fuming cause he'd had to help as no one else would. The h cleans the mother and baby up for burial and the H lashes out at all the cowards who refused to help. He confront the h as to why she would risk it, and she tells him she's barren. He's attracted to her and needs distraction, so he tells her she can stay and will be his leman (mistress). She agrees, they get along and her brother works in the stable. (hide spoiler)]

The h's brother is actually her son... and the H's. She's peeled him off the battlefield around a decade before when she was really young and nursed him back to health in secret - H was the enemy. Knowing how dangerous it was for her, he left without a word, and then she found herself preggers. Refusing to tell her father who the baby daddy was, she was all but outcast within the family, and then, when after a difficult labour that midwife declared she was barren, she lost all value to the family and was completely ignored. The older brother was an evil little shit who was gay, and his man servant/lover was even more evil. The h found the lover hitting on her son and threatened him, so they killed her father to get rid of her protection and leave her brother as head of the clan, so the h and her son ran to the H. The H didn't recognize her (and I don't think she was really expecting him to). The brother and the lover track them down and snatch the son, and she has to tell the H who he really is to get him to go after the boy. (hide spoiler)]

Barbara Freethy, Summer Secrets

Ok, dot points?

- sisters (I think 3) who participated in a sailing race with their dad when they were teens-ish. One was around 16 another was somewhere near 20
- there was an accident in the race and several crew were lost from at least one boat (storm I think)
- there were secrets that the girls kept from the public about that night/the trip that made them uncomfortable talking about the race, but I think they were 'local heroes' (both won the race and maybe because of things that happened that the public did know... I think)
- a man, (the H) comes to town to quietly prob the happenings of the race and ends up connecting with the oldest sister (the h)
- the H has a secret agenda, being there to hunt for the bio mother of his brothers adopted daughter (who I think appears to the H and his bro to be looking to get the kid back... Kids between 5-10 I think)
- there's another race while the H is there and I think the girls are talked into helping man one of the crews
- I'm pretty sure the sisters dad dies in the original boat race, but if not, I'm almost certain he is dead by the time the H shows up

Al of the above is outted fairly quickly in the book, the rest of the stuff I can remember is more twist/spoiler plot.
