My stuffy nose is gone, my sore throat is gone, all the stuffy headache stuff is gone, my voice is starting to gain it's usual tone and not that of a heavy smoker. The only thing I can't seem to get rid of is this damned cough. It just needs to bugger off and die already.
My reading schedule is packed full of great stuff and the library just keeps hitting me with more greatness. Today I got my copy of Storm Front that is narrated by James Marsters. I've been meaning to reread the Harry Dresden series and I've heard some glowing reviews of James's narration so I'm looking forward to that.
There is a potential end to One Piece... in five years... maybe. Supposedly it's either in its final arc or starting it's final arc. Looked it up and and they are finishing Wano and then moving into the final arc. There is supposedly 3 years of material left but I'd take that with a grain of salt.
For those who are lost and not sure what we are rambling about. One Piece is a Japanese manga series that has been running since 1997. There are currently over 100 books in the series and over 1,000 chapters total. As of August last year there are over 516.6 million books in circulation. This is a massive franchise and, in my opinion, some pretty solid writing. The anime is not as great though.
I was looking at my list and there was Berserk, Uzumaki, and Monster. All amazing series and peak of their genre but not an easy thing for someone to just jump into. Then there is things like GTO, FMA, I Hate Fairyland, Black Lagoon, Vagabond, Hack/Slash, etc
That's the problem. The first thing that pops into my head is Berserk and that is not friendly to beginners or anyone in general.
I've watched Spy x Family or at least a few episodes and it's a fun series. I want to give that a read but the wait list at the library is stupid long currently.
I'm scrolling through my recommendations and I'm having a bit of a hard time. I'm a bit self conscious about recommendations. After that it's a torrent of:Nope, to dark
Nope, to violent
Is that even in print?
Do we want to recommend series with over 100 books in it that isn't even done yet?
Nope, to weird
Monster girls? Nah, to weird again
This might be a little preemptive but I think I'm actually getting better. I got some solid sleep last night, I can breathe through both nostrils again, and my throat feels a lot better. I'm not a 100% as I still have a bit of tickle/soreness in my throat but overall I'm feeling pretty good. I could still use some sleep though. That part is kind of frustrating. I came off a vacation feel well rested to then I have my sleep utterly ruined by this stupid cold.
Self help is probably the thing on that list that I dread the most. I've never read a self help book in my life. I think the only time I've even looked at one was in the 90's when those Chicken Soup for the xxxxx Soul books were a thing.
I swear it's worse that it's a reread as well. I know what's coming, I know how good it is, and I just want to keep reading.
I made the mistake of starting
on audio over lunch. I listened to about 30 minutes of it and I just want to plug in my headphones, ignore work, and get lost in this world.
Exactly and UF can do it in a couple of different ways. There is the UF where the supernatural is out in the open. Everyone knows about it and life has adapted to these aspects. It's interesting to see what our world would look like with this magic in it. Then there is the UF where the supernatural is either an outright secret or just a "secret" from the common person. How do they keep these things secret? How does this supernatural society exist separate from our own? It just raises all these interesting questions.
I'm trying to think of the correct words here so bear with me.For me urban fantasy adds spice to the mundane. I know in the real world that the manhole cover I'm walking past is nothing more than a manhole cover down into a sewer system. In an urban fantasy novel though that might be the secret entrance to an underground race of people, a side entrance to a hidden city, etc. When you combine that with an older city like London, Paris, Tokyo and the possibilities for all sorts of hidden secrets are endless.
There is also a spectacle aspect of things as well. Ariel dogfights between a helicopter gunship an an ancient dragon over the Las Vegas strip or riding a zombie T-Rex through downtown Chicago. Knights of the round table wearing jet packs.
Now I'm not saying that other fantasy can't have those things (secrets and spectacles) but UF brings a unique flavor of awesome to the table.
I finished this book this morning on the way to work and it was an interesting start to the series. Of course Murderbot is a relatable character and there is enough action/mystery to move things along. I'd say my only real criticism would be the length. This is just to short. I wanted to know more, see more, I just wanted more. For instance the explanation for the events was solid but at the same time I felt like it just created more questions for me. I'm very curious to see where this series will go from here for our antisocial robot.
Can someone just take me out back and put me down already. I got about four hours sleep last night all broken up into nice 30 minute segments. I'd lay there for a bit slowly drifting off only to wake up thirty minutes later with a sore throat and trying to breathe through 500 lbs of mucus packed into only one nostril. I'd get up, blow my nose again, drink some more water, and try to sleep again. Rinse and repeat until about 3:30 when I just gave up and got up for the day. There have been a couple times where I've felt fine. I took a shower where the hot water was cranked nearly as high as I could get it. I felt great after that. The other time is when walking to work this morning. I mostly felt fine for the walk but I was seriously beat by the time I got to work. This cold needs to realize that it's not wanted or loved here and it needs to bugger off.
Hmmmm, are you reading an electronic copy or a physical copy? If an electronic copy could you send me a link? There are a lot of different Wolverine series and what not on here so it's not an easy thing to search. If there is no link a couple of things I try to do is search by ISBN number, or "Wolverine" and either the author's first or last name.
Great, super, amazing. I had to laugh though, I was sitting here yesterday with the window open and I could hear someone else hacking out their lungs. Kind of made me feel good knowing I was not alone in my misery.
