See the words "massive cliffhanger" really make me want to put off reading the book - as much as I love Schwab and I was so looking forward to reading that book I don't think it's fair to readers to leave things like that.
For Fantasy I would like to nominate The Deep Sea Diver's Syndrome by Serge Brussolo. Brussolo is an acclaimed French writer who has been around for a long time but his work is only now being translated more widely into English. This book is one that was just recently released and so is easily available both in print and ebook form. For SF I would like to nominate Our Lady of the Ice by Cassandra Rose Clarke.
Alissa wrote: "Justine wrote: "I've just started The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard."On my TBR shortlist, is it good?
I haven't quite finished, but I like it. It's one of the group reads for SpecFic BR this month, so there are others who have already finished it and I think the reactions are a bit mixed.
I've only read two as well, the other being Seveneves. I have to say I really liked Seveneves a lot. If you like hard SF I would definitely recommend that one.
Christine wrote: "Last night I finished Tower of Thorns which I liked even better than Dreamer's Pool. I strongly recommend both of these books; unfortunately, my library doesn't have..."Christine, the third book of Blackthorn and Grim, Den of Wolves is due to be released in November, so hopefully you can get it from your library soon after!
I'm just finishing up The Red: First Light by Linda Nagata and then I'll be jumping right into The Spider's War.
I finished Nova by Margaret Fortune, and I thought it was a very good debut novel. There aren't a huge number of YA novels in the SF genre, so I'm always happy when another one comes out. This one would have decent cross-over appeal too, I think.I'm now reading Abaddon's Gate, the third book in The Expanse series; after that, I'll be starting the last book in The Dagger and The Coin series, The Spider's War, which comes out on Tuesday!
I loved the idea of the Primer and found that the best part of the book. I enjoyed the story right up to the end, at which point I sort of found things a bit incomprehensible. I didn't find the end as satisfying as I would have liked given how much I was enjoying following Nell in particular.
I read this quite a long time ago; I liked it right up until the end and then I didn't like the end as much. I actually didn't read another Stephenson book after this one until this year when I read Seveneves. I won't be re-reading it, but I'm interested to follow the discussion.
I just finished In The Afterlight, the last book in The Darkest Minds trilogy; it wrapped everything up really well with an exciting finish.I'm now reading Nova by Margaret Fortune.
I finished A Thousand Nights and it was great. It's a book I would recommend if you like a Middle Eastern setting. It isn't really a retelling but more a story inspired by the original. Excellent writing with a lot of hidden depth.I also read the YA book The Wrath and the Dawn which really is more of a retelling type of story. It was very well written, and again, if you like books with Middle Eastern setting and a romance element, then this would be a good pick.
I'm now reading The Darkest Minds series; so far I've finished the first book (The Darkest Minds) and I thought it was a nicely paced, well-developed YA story with interesting characters. I'm enjoying it!
Tani that book by Moira J. Moore sounds really good! I'd love to hear what you think of it once you're done.
I finished Calamity, and would not recommend it. The book was a mess and an unfortunate way to finish a series.I'm now reading A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston.
Actually...one could say the same thing about SO many things these days...A Song of Ice and Fire of course comes immediately to mind. I was recently called "adorable" for assuming that at some point that one would in fact be finished:)
Kernos wrote: "I've started the The War Against The Chtorr by David Gerrold"Oh good for you! Starting a series that will likely never be finished:) I read these back when they were first written. Still waiting for the end.
I finished Riders and found it OK, but pretty standard. I'm currently reading Calamity by Brandon Sanderson, the last book in The Reckoners trilogy. The reviews have been a bit mixed and I wasn't completely taken by the last book, but I want to see how everything ends.
