Jane, Lizzie, Mary, Kitty, Lydia. The 5 Bennet sisters. What are your favourite aspects of these girls? What is your favourite "sisterly" moment between them?
"If he had any compassion for me' cried her husband impatiently 'he would not have danced half so much! For God's sake, say no more of his partners. Oh! that he sprained his ankle in the first dance!"Mrs Bennet provides constant entertainment throughout this book, as her priorities seem completely skewed. What is your favourite moment of hers?
"An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. -- Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do"is there anyone who doesn't actually cheer when they read this line? Let's talk about how brilliant Mr Bennet is!
Do you refuse to watch any media adaptations of Austen's works, or do you thrive on them? Do you prefer the BBC version of P&P to the 2005 Movie, or is it the other way around?Talk about everything to do with the films and drama versions of the stories here, everything from casting to scenery- go for it!
During this month, I will also be reading "Longbourn", a re-telling of Pride and Prejudice from the servants point of view. Which leads me to ask the question, what do you guys think of re-tellings of Austen? love them? hate them? What about the likes are "pride and prejudice and zombies" or "the jane austen book club" etc...Do you have any re-tellings you would like to recommend to others?
My favourite Austen is actually Northanger Abbey, followed by Pride and Prejudice in second place. Northanger Abbey takes over for me because of the great sarcasm within the book (and who doesn't love Henry Tilney?)
This is a board specifically created for those of us who are new to Austen, any concerns or confusions, feel free to speak up! You will be welcomed with open arms (on all boards, of course, but here especially).
This is the board where you can introduce yourselves, maybe have a bit of a chat before the read-a-long starts etc. Go for it :)My name, for those who don't know, is Andie. I run a book blog named "thebookheap" over at wordpress. I've recently graduated from my masters degree in criminal justice at university and currently, I work in a toy shop.
